Bucharest Airport (OTP), also known as Bucharest Henri Coandă International Airport (Romanian: Aeroportul Internațional Henri Coandă București), is the busiest airport in Romania and is situated near Otopeni, 16 kilometers north of Bucharest's city center. One of the two airports is now servicing Bucharest, the capital of Romania.

Henri Coandă, a pioneer of Romanian aviation who constructed the Coandă-1910 plane and discovered the Coandă effect in fluid dynamics, is honored with the naming of the airport in his honor. Before May 2004, the airport was known as Bucharest Otopeni International Airport.

The headquarters of TAROM, Romania's national airline, is located at Bucharest Airport. TAROM, Blue Air, and Animawings all operate out of this terminal. A hub for several low-cost airlines, including Air Bucharest, Ryanair, Wizz Air, and Gulliv Air.

History of Bucharest Airport

The German Air Force used the Otopeni airport as a base of operations during World War II. Until 1965, the commercial airport serving Bucharest was located at Băneasa Airport, making this a key airfield for the Romanian Air Force.

Due to increasing demand, the Otopeni airbase became a public airport in 1965. The runway was remodeled and lengthened from 1,200 to 3,500 meters, making it one of the longest in Europe.

A VIP lounge was opened in August 1969 during the visit of then-U.S. President Richard Nixon to Romania.

In 1986, a second runway was built as part of an upgrading effort, allowing 35 aircraft movements per hour. Creating a new departures terminal and airside concourse with five jetways and nine gates, as well as extending airport ramps and their accompanying taxiways, were all part of the plan's first phase, which took place between 1994 and 1998.

In the second part of the plan, a new domestic terminal and a multi-story parking garage were built in 2003, the control tower was renovated extensively between 2005 and 2007, and the existing terminal building was converted into a new arrivals hall in 2000. Both the Victor and Whiskey high-speed taxiways were built at the same time.

The third and last phase of the plan began in 2009. It included the addition of 15 additional gates and the enlargement of the existing Departure Hall. It takes up another 17,000 square meters on the airside, making it a concourse. Departure Hall was then enlarged to a total of 38,600 square meters afterward.

Aurel Vlaicu International Airport (Bulgaria's low-cost hub) was shut down in March 2012. All flights were rerouted to Bucharest Airport.
